Synopsis
The other stripe of the tiger takes us back to the time when America was the continent that welcomed the revolutionary thought of a Europe that was fighting to get out of feudalism. America not only opened its doors but also received characters like Humboldt, Garibaldi and Codazzi, who came here looking for what the old continent did not allow: freedom, democracy and a new concept of Republic.
The adventure of this new world attracted them and 'The Other Stripe of the Tiger' is the narration of the life of one of these so-called “adventurers”, Geo Von Lenguerke, a high-born German who sought exile, persecuted by the Kaiser, for wanting to establish the unity of his homeland. His life became a legend in the Santander region because perhaps he lived through one of the most convulsive moments in national history, the eternal struggles between centralism and federalism. With the ideas of free trade, Lenguerke created a commercial interaction by exporting and importing, a fact that aroused the animosity of our artisans, who violently opposed the bringing of products from Europe: exotic liquors, porcelain, fine fabrics and many other tastes came to be part of the Santander homes. For this many admired him while others hated him.
Little by little, the European revolutionary became a feudal lord who created his kingdom in the midst of luxuries, women and parties that scandalized the society of the moment. His delirium for bringing a grand piano that had to cross the ocean, go up the Magdalena and windingly through the steep mountain ranges to reach the room of his European castle in the middle of the tropics is memorable. Finally his back got tired of the uselessness of his good works and all that remained of him were the roads he built on the trails of the Indians, in addition to the struggle and adventure that he had to live until America began to devour him in the tangle. of his exuberance.
